Protecting God’s Children

While no one can promise that abuse will never happen, as individuals, we can always take steps to avoid putting ourselves and our children in harm’s way. We live in a digital world. The level of privacy that children are allowed is unprecedented.

  • It is important to have, on a regular basis, conversations with your children about safety and appropriate contact from adults.
  • Adults are not the friends of children.
  • Adults should not be contacting children privately without the knowledge of their parents.
  • If it becomes necessary for an adult to pay special attention to a child, that adult should notify the parents of that child to let them know.
  • Parents should monitor Facebook, texts, and all other social media that they allow their children to use.
  • Children should be consistently told that if they receive unwanted or uncomfortable attention from an adult, that it is not their fault and they should tell their parents immediately.
  • The community must be vigilant, and report any activity that seems even a little inappropriate–regardless of who the potential offender is.
  • Enable parental controls on all electronic devices, cable, satellite and internet access.

ANYONE who feels that they have had any inappropriate contact by church personnel should immediately call the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit at 732-431-7160 and then Diocesan Abuse Hotline at: 1-888-296-2965.
